Golden Peak

Story

Some of the best plain air paintings come from being in the right place for just a few fleeting minutes.

Dad and I headed over to Silly Mountain with our easels, looking toward Flatiron as the sun began to drop.  As evening settled over the desert, that last golden light found the mountain and transformed it.

The rocks warmed. The shadows deepened.  And for a short while, the entire peak seemed to glow.

Golden Peak was painted right there in that changing light-14 x 18 on board, capturing the colors before the sun disappeared behind the horizon. And the mountains turn pink.

Another evening painting beside my dad. Another moment I'm grateful we stopped long enough to capture.

Reflection

Light has a way of revealing what was there all along.

The mountain hadn't changed, but for those few minutes, the setting sun allowed us to see it differently-the ordinary desert transformed by warmth and color.

I think life gives us moments like that, too. Moments when we slow down enough to notice the beauty that has been quietly waiting for our attention.

Sometimes we don't need to go searching for something extraordinary. 

We simply need to notice when the light finds it.
