Twilight Blooms

The Story

There is a particular kind of light in the desert that I never seem to tire of.

It comes just after sunset, when the brilliant gold has faded and the sky begins to soften into pinks, lavenders and purples.  The Superstition Mountains grow darker against that glowing sky, and for a few minutes, everything seems to become still.

Then spring adds another layer of beauty.

When the desert poppies are in bloom, those normally quiet stretches of green and brown suddenly come alive with brilliant yellow, scattered beneath the mountains like little pieces of sunshine left behind.

Twilight Blooms brings those two favorite Arizona moments together-the soft afterglow over the Superstitions and the joyful color of a desert spring.

Painted in acrylic on a 48 x 24 canvas, I used a palette knife to build the texture of the mountains, creating a rugged contrast against the softness of the sky and flowers below.

Reflection

The desert has taught me that beauty doesn't always arrive when we expect it.

Sometimes it comes after the sun has already disappeared, when we think the best of the evening is over.

Sometimes it comes after a long, quiet season, when a landscape that seemed almost barren suddenly bursts into bloom.

There is something hopeful about both.

A reminder that God is still creating beauty in the fading light and bringing new life from places that once seemed empty.

There is always reason to keep watching.
